This time of year spring cleaning is on everyone’s mind. But I have a way to make your spring cleaning much easier. It’s starting with these spring decluttering tips. When you start with a spring declutter the results will last all season long and then some!
What is Spring Decluttering vs Spring Cleaning?
You may be wondering what the difference is between spring cleaning and spring decluttering. Well, they are very similar and to be clear, spring declutter does not actually replace spring cleaning. But what it does do is make your spring cleaning 1000 times easier.
Spring cleaning is all about getting into those often overlooked areas such as cleaning baseboards, washing curtains, and moving all the furniture to get that deep cleaning work done.
However, with a spring declutter it’s all about removing the excess so that your spring cleaning will be so much easier. By taking some extra time to actually declutter and get rid of all that stuff that you neither use or love your entire home will feel not just clean but refreshed relaxing and peaceful. What a wonderful way to start the new season!
Spring Decluttering Tips to Make Spring Cleaning Easier
When it comes to the best spring decluttering tips, I’ve found that the number one tip is to get started decluttering by going room by room. After all, this is usually how we do our spring cleaning and it also works best for your spring decluttering.
While you can start with whichever room works best for you, I always recommend starting in the bedroom. This is because your bedroom is where you start and end your day. Having a clean and decluttered bedroom can set the tone for the rest of your day. It also gives you a peaceful and relaxing place to go when you need a break from the rest of your spring decluttering!
If you have a ton of clutter, you may prefer to start with a super easy spot. This makes the bathroom the best choice. It’s pretty easy to make decluttering decisions in that room.
No matter which room you choose to start in, once you have completed that one room, move on to the next room.

Spring Decluttering Tips for the Bedroom
Bedding
If you usually swap out heavier cozier bedding for lighter bed linens in the spring and summer months this is the perfect time to declutter any bed linens that are no longer in good shape. This also helps you to note anything that needs to be replaced. Remember there’s no reason to keep more than two sets of linens per bed.
Also, while you’re focused on your bed this is a good time to look underneath and declutter any items you’ve been strong under there. Find a proper home for those items or let them go!
If you live in a smaller home and under the bed storage is essential that’s okay, I still want you to go through all those items and declutter what you can. Be ruthless here because I promise it will make your spring cleaning so much easier if you don’t have to move twenty things just to clean.
Tops of Dressers and Nightstands
Now take about 30 extra minutes to go through the things on top of the dressers and on the nightstand. Again, you’re going to start your spring decluttering efforts by returning anything that doesn’t belong in those spots to its proper home.
Toss out all trash and all the things you neither use nor love that’s been stored there.
When it comes to your decor items only return the pieces you truly love! Having only a few special decor pieces will make your entire bedroom look cleaner and feel more spacious. Of course, it will also make the actual spring cleaning go much quicker with fewer pieces to dust around!
The Closet
Let’s be honest here, it’s so easy to shove things in the closet that we don’t know what to do with and then just forget about them. As part of your spring decluttering it’s time to pull all that stuff out of the closet. Yes, all of it!
Once again, start by finding a proper home for anything that does not belong in there or place it in the declutter pile. I promise you all that stuff is not worth the space it’s taking up. It will feel so nice to open your closet and see a clear and organized space!
Clothing Items
Now onto the clothing items. Because I live in Southern California so we don’t have major changes in our seasons so there’s no need to pack away seasonal clothing. Other than swapping out sweaters and shorts everything pretty much stays the same.
However, if you live in a climate where you change out your clothing each season, go through your fall and winter clothing before packing it away. There is no reason to store w0rn out sweaters or jackets. Toss those items now! And don’t forget about scarves, hats, and other winter accessories get rid of anything that’s not in good shape or you do not feel wonderful in!
As far as your spring and summer clothing goes make sure what you are keeping is in good shape. Now’s the time to get rid of any worn-out flip-flops and sandals. Toss any worn-out t-shirts, or better yet you can cut them into cleaning rags, they’ll be perfect for your spring cleaning!
Don’t forget to examine your bathing suits for failing elastic. If you come across items you never wore last year, place them in the donate pile. After all, if you didn’t wear them last year, they are not your favorites!
Spring Decluttering Tips for the Bathroom
I don’t know about you, but the first place I go in the morning (after starting the coffee of course) is the bathroom. Much like your bedroom, having the first room you enter in your morning decluttered and cleaned gives a great start to your day.
Start your spring decluttering in the bathroom by going through towels and bathmats. Get rid of all items that are ragged, have holes, or need replacing. This is a good time to give your bathroom a little refresh with some new towels, bathmats, or a pretty shower curtain.
The next spring decluttering tip is to go through that medicine cabinet. Things have a way of collecting in there. You need to get rid of all expired medication and other items. Also, declutter any items you don’t regularly use and give the inside of the cabinet a good wipe down before putting things back.
Now it’s time to go through the bathroom cabinets and under the sink. As you are decluttering these areas keep in mind that much like clothing, some makeup and skincare products change with the seasons. You’ll want to toss any items that will expire before you’ll use them again. You also want to toss any make-up brushes that you don’t regularly use or are broken and in bad shape.
The same is true with all other bathroom toiletries, declutter any lotions and perfumes that you don’t use, or don’t care for the smell of. In the springtime, most of us go for lighter and fresher scents so make sure to let go of those heavier scents.
Also, don’t forget to check the expiration date on your sunscreen and other suncare products. These do expire and it’s important to get rid of those suncare products that are past their expiration date.
Spring Decluttering Tips for the Kitchen
I’ll be honest here, I am all about simple meals year-round and I try and get in and out of the kitchen as quickly as possible. This is even more true in the spring and summer months. The last thing I want to do is turn on the oven or spend hours cooking over a hot stove.
So my first spring decluttering tip for the kitchen is to seriously consider how you use your kitchen. What I mean here, is are you like me, where cooking is not your favorite thing? Or do you resemble Martha Stweart and love creating new spring dishes and desserts?
Knowing how you use your kitchen will help you focus your decluttering efforts. There are lots of tips here on the best ways to declutter and organize your kitchen whether you are a passionate cook or have hub grub on speed dial.
For now, take stock of what you have and clearly label and organize your items. You will also want to make sure your appliances are in good working order and you have the supplies you need. To do this start decluttering all those plastic storage items without their lids, appliances that don’t work, chipped plates and glasses, and table linens that are in poor shape.
The more room you can create in your kitchen space the easier cooking and baking will be. So box up for donation any excess items you don’t use. This includes:
- Mugs, cups, and glasses
- Extra dishes and plates
- Duplicate kitchen tools and utensils
- Lunchboxes & thermoses
- Excess food storage containers
- Cookbooks you don’t use
- Expired Food
If you’re not sure of how many of these items you should keep, a good starting point is to keep two of each item per family member. This will prevent the sink from filling with dishes, but also allow extra for guests.
Next, go through dish towels, pot holders, and sponges. Toss all old, stained, or smelly items.
Don’t forget to declutter under the sink. Are there any cleaning supplies and products you just don’t like or use any longer? If so, now is the time to get rid of them. Keep only those items you actually use.
Finally, declutter your food items. This includes both the pantry, refrigerator, and freezer. Start by throwing away all expired food and any food that has freezer burn on it. Next look at the food items you have that your family really doesn’t care for. Consider donating those items to a shelter or food pantry. Make sure to give those areas a good wipe-down before putting anything back!
Spring Declutter Tips for Home Decor Items
I am all about the hygge life, especially during the fall and winter months! I love to up the cozy factor in my home with candles, cozy throw blankets, and beautifully textured pillows.
However, in the spring and summer months, the last thing anyone wants is to be surrounded by heavy throw blankets and one too many pillows. This means swapping out the warmer blankets for a lighter muslin fabric and storing away the rest. I also swap out candles for lighter citrusy scents.
Next, focus on your decor items. Now is the time to let go of any decor that’s no longer in good condition or that you no longer love. This is again, a time to be ruthless. The more decor and little nicknack pieces you keep the more work your spring cleaning will require.
If you feel like you have a lot of home decor items that are cluttering up your surfaces make it the goal to remove half of the items. On the other hand, if you feel like most of your surfaces are nicely arranged, declutter at least one home decor item from each surface. This will make the entire room feel lighter!
Spring Decluttering Tips for The Kid’s Playroom/Toys
As the weather warms up, the kids will be spending more time outdoors. This means the things they spend most of their time playing with will change.
If your kids are old enough have them work with you on this project. It’s a great opportunity to talk to them about giving to those less fortunate as they pick out toys to donate that they no longer play with.
Here is a good place to start, that won’t receive much pushback:
- Toys that are broken and no longer work
- Anything no longer loved or played with
- Games with missing parts
- Plastic happy meal or party gift bag toys
- Worn or smelly stuffed animals
In the springtime, it’s helpful to focus on all the summer items. Most likely your kids have sports equipment, and beach or pool items that they outgrew over the fall and winter months. Go ahead and pass along those outgrown items. This will also help you know exactly what items need replacing.
Spring Decluttering Tips for the Mudroom/Entryway
In the spring and summer months, everyone is in and out of the house much more often. This makes it easy for our mudrooms or entryways to collect extra items. Having this area decluttered and organized before the season starts very helpful!
Begin with clearing out any coats, scarves, rain/snow boots, and umbrellas. Make sure they are all in good condition before you pack them away.
Invest in a couple of baskets. Use one for storing shoes, sandals, and flip-flops. The other basket can be used for storing all those summer sporting items that often get brought into the house.
If you don’t have an actual mudroom or entry area that’s okay. You can create any entry area with a small cabinet. Use the bottom of the cabinet to store larger items. A small try on top will be perfect for keeping keys, glasses, and other small items. Then place your storage baskets on either side of the cabinet.
