1. To Make Your Home More Peaceful Be Purposeful In Your Decor
Your home is incredibly personal. It should reflect who YOU are and your personal style. To make your home more peaceful use decor and color schemes that make you feel the most at home, relaxed, and happy to be there. When you walk into your home, you want to feel like it’s a breath of fresh air.
A big part of this comes from making your home visually appealing so that it reflects your style. We all have our own individual styles and even then sometimes the styles we like change.
Also, home decor trends can be just as fickle as changes in clothing trends. Does anyone remember sponged walls?
So if it’s been a while since you’ve updated your home’s look, it may be time to make a few simple changes. You don’t have to go out and purchase all new furniture. But little touches in line with your style can go a long way.
Personally, I love the boho vibe but am also drawn to the industrial look. By adding macrame hanging or boho style pillows I can update the look of my home without spending a fortune.
If you have a few extra dollars a new rug can transform the entire room, check out these rugs from Amazon for under $200.
You really don’t have to spend a lot of money. Heck, even Walmart is stepping up their game in the home decor area. I love these recliners.
Even if your budget is at zero, you can still add little touches by moving things around. When you do this pay attention to how it makes you feel.
With minimal effort, you can create a peaceful home you love to spend time in!
2. Consider How You Use The Space When Decorating
One of the things that can make your home feel chaotic is failing to consider how you are using the space when you’re decorating.
A few years back we needed a new coach. I absolutely love the look of white couches, they create a clean and bright feel. What I failed to consider is that I live with a giant German Shepherd, two children, and a husband that enjoys eating in the living room while sitting on the couch.
You may have guessed that my white couch did not stay white very long. For a while there I wrangled with everyone not to do anything on the couch. If something spilled I yelled “quick clean it up” as if the house were on fire. It most certainly did not create a relaxing and peaceful home environment.
I finally gave in to the fact that the couch will never stay clean and that it was my own fault.
The thing is I want us to all gather together in the living room rather than everyone retreating to their own bedrooms. So I’ve learned from my mistake and I do my best to keep the stains covered until I can justify replacing the couches.
But the reality is I didn’t consider how we use our living room or my family’s habits when insisting on that couch.
You may not be as foolish as me in picking out a white couch, but consider how you use your space when choosing decor. Do you want to take 20 pillows off the bed each night or does your family toss all the couch throw pillows on the floor and it drives you nuts?
Make sure you consider your family and how your space is used with decorating. It will save a lot of frustration and make your home more peaceful.
3. Making Things Functional Creates a Peaceful Home Environment
The items in your home should have a purpose or they quickly become clutter. If you lack storage in your home, consider storage ottomans or storage coffee tables. Look for multipurpose items whenever possible.
Create a landing space that can also be decorative when you walk into your home. I love this cabinet, it’s small enough to fit in an entryway, a simple tray on top for keys with a candle or pretty plant for decoration would be beautiful. The storage cabinets are perfect for holding backpacks and pursues.
When everyone knows where items go, because they have a specific purpose, they are much more likely to be returned to their home. This helps keep the house picked up and creates a relaxing and peaceful home.
4. Tacke Any Problem Area in Your Home That Causes Stress
Our home is so much more than decor and furnishings. There are dishes and laundry to be done. Toys, school supplies, papers, books, the categories are endless.
Is there a particular area that tends to create extra undue stress? If so, you need to come up with a solution for dealing with this area.
Maybe excess dishes piling up throughout the day stress you out when you walk into the kitchen. Consider eliminating the number of glasses or cups you have. By limiting the number of glasses you own, there will be no choice but to rinse the glass rather than grab a new clean one.
If it’s toys or backpacks left around, consider a landing basket or decorative toy box to store the items until they can be returned to their correct location.
Spend some time problem solving until you find a solution that will take the stress away.
5. Clear Surface Clutter
Clutter has an effect on everyone. The flat surfaces in our homes tend to accumulate clutter quickly. When you keep the items that are allowed to live on these surfaces to a minimum, they are less likely to attract more clutter.
The reason is simple when there are limited items you notice something that shouldn’t be there right away. You can easily return it to its rightful home. However, when there is a mix of stuff on your surfaces and more stuff gets added, it becomes overwhelming to clean and clear the clutter.
To prevent this overwhelm, keep your flat surfaces as clear as possible. You’ll find it’s a simple way to make your home more peaceful.
Clear areas produce calm. Having minimal items stored on your flat surfaces allows you to feel calmer, more in control, and reduces the amount of stress in your life.
6. Create Routines
If you’ve read much of this blog you may have realized that I’m a big proponent of having rhythms and routines in your life. I have experienced firsthand the effect they can have on simplifying your life.
The thing I love so much about routines is that they put your everyday must-dos on autopilot. This means you don’t have to waste time and energy having to remember every single thing every single day. Your routines just allow them to happen.
I have cleaning routines, morning routines, evening routines, and routines for maintaining a clutter-free and organized home, as much as possible, anyway.
Having clear set routines will aid you in making your home more peaceful!
7. Create a Peaceful Home By Bringing In Nature
I definitely don’t have a green thumb and I’m still known to kill even cactus plants. For years I let this stop me from having plants in my home because I was convinced I’d just kill them. And while yes, I do occasionally still kill poor innocent plants from time to time, most of them actually stay alive.
Plants add so much to your home. They freshen up the entire space and create a naturally calming effect. If you really are concerned about keeping plants alive they make some amazing realistic fake trees. I’ve even been considering this one because I hear fiddle leaf trees can be tricky to keep alive.
Another option is keeping fresh flowers in your home. Trader Joe’s is actually my favorite place to buy flowers. They have a great selection and even better prices. I add the cost of the flowers directly to my grocery and household items budget.
8. Using Scents Will Help Your Home Feel Peaceful
Scents are very powerful, they can evoke memories and strong feelings. They can also create a soothing and peaceful atmosphere.
Essential oils are my favorite way to diffuse a peaceful and relaxing scent. My favorites are either the Doterra’s Serenity blend or plain Lavender. There are a lot of essential oil recipes to help you find a favorite scent. Here are 12 to start with.
Amazon has some nice diffusers at great price points. Here is the one I use.
An alternative is naturally scented candles. Actually, I use both candles and my diffuser. Good quality candles give off both a nice scent and create a beautiful ambiance.
9. Create a Peaceful Home With The Right Lighting
Lighting is another area that will help you make your home more peaceful.
If the house is often dark and closed up it will feel cold and uninviting. However, by opening up the curtains or shades everything instantly feels much brighter and lighter. Add a flickering candle and some fresh flowers and don’t you feel peaceful and calm just thinking about it!
In the evening time add some soft glowing lamps to set a peaceful mood. I love my salt lamp and string lights for this purpose.
The lighting in your home very much affects how you feel. It’s an excellent way to create an environment of peace and relaxation.
10. Play Good Music to Make Your Home More Peaceful
Everyone in my immediate family has a pretty strong love for music. It’s something important to each of us and playing good music impacts each of us. You’ve probably heard the old saying “Music Calms the Savage Beast”. It really is true. The right type of music will make your home more peaceful!
The type of music you want to play will depend on what’s going on at that moment. Because music sets the tone when cleaning or doing other chores pick something upbeat that gets you moving. When it’s time to eat or you want everyone to settle down, go for your favorite worship music or something instrumental.
If you’re hanging out playing a board game or just visiting, a favorite playlist of classics is perfect.
Set the mood you want to create with some good music. It’s my favorite way to have a relaxing and peaceful home environment.
11. Plan Healthy Meals
Let’s face it when everyone is hungry and you have no idea what to feed them, cranky dispositions and bad attitudes are almost guaranteed. On the other hand, a healthy meal on the table quickly calms them down.
Putting together a weekly plan for meals is a huge stress reliever. You know exactly what you’re going to make and you end the last-minute runs to the drive-thru.
Meal planning doesn’t have to be complicated. If you’re not in the habit of regularly planning out your meals, here are some good ways to help you simplify meal planning.
Speaking of meals, one of the lessons I’ve learned is the value of making clean up a family affair. There’s no reason one person should have to do all the cooking and cleaning alone.
Cleaning up after mealtime as a family increases the feelings of peace and harmony as you all learn to work together. You really will increase your bonds with one another and reduce stress levels.
12. Take care of You
Are you aware that you personally set the tone for your home? Whatever your attitude is, your family will follow. This means making sure you’re responding in a peaceful and calm manner.
Trust me, I know this ain’t easy. But it is easier if you are taking the time to take care of yourself. Make it a point to regularly spend time just for you.
Honestly, even if it’s just spending an extra 5 minutes sitting in the car before you walk in the house or taking a shower after everyone else is asleep. You are able to control how you respond to others when you take time for yourself.
At the same time, it’s important to be flexible. As important as it is to set up a regular time of self-care if you insist “this is my time” you end up creating tension. So yes set aside time for yourself, just remember to be flexible.
Creating a Peaceful Home Is Worth The Effort
While each of these ways to make your home more peaceful does take purpose and intention, it’s not hard. Any effort you put in will be well worth it!
Work on decorating in a style you love, set up some systems and routines to keep the clutter away and your space clean. Then add a few beautifying touches to create a relaxing and peaceful environment.
When you do this I guarantee your home will be a place you love and a place everyone wants to spend time!
