We all know about the importance of spring cleaning. But what about her baby sister Fall? Is fall cleaning a thing? Should you do a thorough fall cleaning of your home the way you do in the spring?
The simple answer is a resounding yes!!! While big sister spring cleaning may get most of the attention, fall cleaning is just as important.
Let’s look at why doing a fall cleaning of your home matters and why it’s important!
Why Fall Cleaning is Important
One of the big reasons we love a good spring cleaning is because our homes have been locked up all winter long. The sunshine and fresh breezes of spring allow us to open up the windows and literally let the sunshine in. We want our homes to feel as fresh as the spring air feels.
Well, the same is true when it comes to the beginning of fall. For most of us, our homes have been locked up with the air conditioning blowing all summer long. The cool fall air is a welcome relief and we look forward to cozing (not sure that’s a word, but I’m going with it) up in our homes.
Plus, there are some unique advantages and benefits to fall cleaning. Here’s a look at 6 reasons you should do a fall cleaning:
1. Fall is the Most Productive Time of the Year
This is something I only recently learned, fall is the most productive time of the year. Yes, it’s true. In a study conducted over a four-year period, it was found that people are more productive in fall than at any other time of the year.
Spending the day doing a deep cleaning is generally not our favorite thing to do. But, taking advantage of this natural increase in your productivity is a great reason to do a fall cleaning. You’ll be more likely to stay focused and get more cleaning done in a shorter period of time.
2. Fall Cleaning Helps You Create Good Habits for Your Home
If you’ve been around here for any time, you know how important I believe your home environment is. Because your home is the center of life, it can impact all other areas of your life.
So creating good habits for your home matters. Having a built-in time to go through your home twice a year is a good habit to develop. When you set aside time for deep cleaning on a regular basis, the tasks never pile up or feel like they’re too much!
If you only do a spring cleaning once a year, your house becomes cluttered and the job takes twice as long. When you commit to doing a fall cleaning in addition to your spring cleaning, you create good habits for maintaining your home.
3. Prepares Your Home for Hibernation
One of the many things I love about fall is the cool crisp air. Opening the windows and letting the cool airflow through the house is such a great feeling. However, it also means that in a very short time that cool crisp air will be downright cold.
The windows will be closed and the heater turned on. You know that smell when you turn the heater on for the first time of the season. Well, that’s all the dust and dirt that has been collecting.
And as the temperatures continue to drop all the dust in your home has nowhere to go. Without a fall cleaning, it will stay there until next spring.
By doing a fall cleaning, you’ll ensure your winter hibernation does not have any uninvited dust bunnies or other unwanted contaminates that took up residence during the summer months.
4. Fall Cleaning Keeps Winter Illness Away
As much as I love the fall season, I am not a fan of the flu season it brings along with it. Of course, I could equally do without the winter colds that seem to go on and on.
Fall cleaning is the best way to prevent those seasonal viruses. By sanitizing your home now with a good deep cleaning, you know you’ll be doing everything you can to keep your home healthy.
5. Holiday Preparations Will be Easier
Fall ushers in all the holiday festivities. With holiday decor going up and guests coming in, doing a deep fall cleaning ahead of time will make your home run smoothly during this busy time!
Even if you’re not hosting during the holidays, this time of year tends to get extra busy. There are more school activities, pumpkin carving, apple picking, Halloween celebrations, and then of course Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner.
Taking the time now to plan a weekend for a deep fall cleaning will save you a lot of time. You’ll only have to focus on wiping down surfaces and a quick vacuum or mopping of the floors during all the busyness.
You’ll be able to relax in your clean and tidy home and truly enjoy the festivities of the season!
6. Your Home Will Feel Cozier
Studies unquestionably show that clutter and a messy home create tension, and irritability and is linked to negative emotions like confusion, tension, and irritability while an organized home tends to produce more positive emotions like calmness and a sense of well-being.
When it comes to the fall and winter months, Hygge, which is all things cozy, is at the top of our home to-do list. It’s the season for snuggling up with a cozy blanket, a good book, a favorite drink, and a warm glowing candle.
However, none of that is really possible if your home’s a mess. Clean spaces are what encourage a calm and cozy home.
No matter what your style is, having a clean and clutter-free space is a must for creating a cozy home.
Since the colder months generally means more time at home, this is the perfect time to buckle down and do a good fall cleaning. You’ll be able to truly settle in and enjoy the season in your clean and cozy home!

You convinced me I am going to do some fall cleaning before the snowy weather comes! I started off by getting professional carpet cleaning done. It has made my house feel so much cleaner. Especially with kids and pets tracking in fall leaves and mud. Thanks for the inspiration!
