When you’ve finally finished decluttering your home, are you wondering what to do with all that extra time?
The question was asked recently:
“I am a stay at home mom, my kids are at school all day, I have finished decluttering, now what, how do you fill your time”
Yes, you can actually finish decluttering, and when you do this is a fairly common question. Because so much of our time is spent on our possessions, when we shrink our physical possessions we naturally expand our available time.
With all of this freed up time, it can be really easy to lose direction. This is especially true if before decluttering you filled most of your extra time shopping.
Let’s be honest, many of us use shopping as a form of entertainment. After all, how easy is it to run into Target for one item and come out an hour or two later with a full shopping cart?
Not only that but when weren’t shopping we spent our extra time caring for all the stuff we bought. The more stuff we have the more chores we have to care for and maintain all that stuff.
Now that the excess is eliminated from your life, it can be easy to get bored. Sometimes we even feel lost and unsure of what to do with all the extra time.
If you find yourself in this place, start by looking at your why. What was the reason you began to pursue simplicity and declutter your home, to begin with?
Chances are you wanted the time and freedom to focus on what was truly important to you. Well, now’s your opportunity to do just that!
To get you started with some ideas and practical ways to fill your time when you are unsure what to do now that you’ve finished decluttering, here are seven ways to focus on what matters most!

1. Spend Time With Your People
In my opinion, the absolute greatest benefit of having finished decluttering your home and life is that you have time to truly and authentically invest in the lives of the people you love. Your extra time is an excellent opportunity to build these relationships.
Whether it be with a parent, sibling, other extended family members, or a friend, schedule regular visits with them.
Pour into the people in your life, they are what matters most!
2. Volunteer
Use your extra time to volunteer for a local charity or organization that is near and dear to your heart. This will bless both you and the organization.
Think of animal shelters, your church, a local hospital, or your children’s school. There are so many worthwhile organizations that will benefit from your time. It’s a great way to add meaning and purpose to your life.
All you need to do is contact whichever organization sounds best to you and schedule a regular time to volunteer.
3. Learn Something New
I love learning new things. Lately, I’ve been into learning more about health and nutrition. Why not take advantage of your new found time and learn more about something that you find super interesting.
It doesn’t have to be complicated. Even something as simple as learning a new recipe or how to cook a certain ethnic variety or type of food can be really fun.
If there is something you’ve always wanted to learn more about, this is the perfect time to do it.
4. Read More
This can go hand in hand with learning something new. But it’s also so beneficial just to sit and read a good book.
There are many articles written on the benefits of reading. The benefits range from protecting your brain from Alzheimer’s to reducing stress to forming better friendships.
Take advantage of this life-transforming habit and read more. Visit your local library or consider signing up for Kindle Unlimited and enjoy reading a vast array of books without having to leave your clutter-free home! Click here for a free 30 day Kindle Unlimited trial.
5. Take up a Sport
As positive as reading can be for your mental state, taking up a sport will do wonders for your physical health. Plus, you’ll get the added benefit of meeting new people and just having a great time.
If you’re not into sports or the athletic type (raising my hand here), consider an exercise class. You can join a yoga class, do some lap swimming, or even join a dance class.
This is a fantastic use of your time and will make you feel good about yourself. So get out there and start moving!
6. Show Hospitality
You finally did it, your house is clutter-free and so much easier to maintain. That is something to celebrate. And of course, celebrations are always better with other people to help you celebrate.
Because of all your hard work, it’s now easier than ever to spontaneously invite people over. Another big plus is that because you spend so much less time having to clean and prepare for your guest, you’ll actually be able to fully enjoy those guests!
With all these benefits, open your home and show off all your hard work. Invite a few girlfriends over for an impromptu brunch or invite another family over for a weekend barbeque. You can even show some hospitality by hosting a Bible study or book club.
This is such a positive way to make use of your time after you’ve finished decluttering.
7. Create a Bucket List
For another fun way to use your extra time now that you’ve finished decluttering, consider creating a bucket list. This is so much fun and easy to do. Just grab a piece of paper and a pen then sit down with your favorite drink and start dreaming of all the things you would love to do.
Don’t limit yourself. Dream Big! Nothing is off-limits. Write it all down and have fun with it. It’s also fun to include something you can do today.
The point is to have fun and get the ideas flowing. Afterward, you can start setting some goals and make those dreams come true!
Decluttering your home is no easy feat. Even if you’re not at the point of feeling completely clutter-free, you’ve been working hard and clearing space so that you can enjoy what matters most. Own your time and turn every day into a favorite day!
