Focus on the Bedding
Of course, having a comfortable place for your guests to sleep is one of the first essentials to making your guest room welcoming.
If you have an older mattress in the guest room you may want to consider one of those foam pillow tops that will make the mattress extra comfy.
But the real key is the bedding. Start by setting out fresh sheets on the bed. Next, choose blankets that will be comfortable for the current weather conditions. If it’s wintertime, you’ll want something a little thicker and cozier. For summer or spring consider a lighter blanket.
It’s always a good idea to have an extra blanket at the end of the bed just in case.
New Pillows are fairly inexpensive and can make the room feel extra cozy.
Keep Bath Towels and Washcloths in the Guest Room
One of the big things that make a guest feel at home, is not having to ask where everything is located. This includes towels and washcloths.
Having a supply of these items readily available makes your guest feel welcome and at home. Just make sure to place them where they can be seen or let them know where they are located.
Provide a Basket of Toiletries
I feel like somebody always forgets something when we travel. So having a stash of travel-size toiletries in the guest room is an excellent way to make your guests feel at home in case any of these essentials were forgotten.
Some ideas of what to include are things like shampoo and conditioner, extra toothbrushes and toothpaste, soaps, lotions, a hairbrush and hair ties, extra razors, cotton balls, and basically anything you can think of that you might forget. Placing everything in a cute little basket on top of the dresser or end table will make your guest feel welcome and will be highly appreciated.
Have a Dedicated Space for Clothing
Living out of a suitcase has some challenges, including creating extra wrinkles. Providing some designated closet space or an empty drawer space will be very much appreciated by your guest. It will also help them feel welcome and at home. Don’t forget to make sure you have a few extra hangers.
Include Bedside Lighting
Having a light beside the bed is so helpful especially when you are in an unfamiliar room. Your guests won’t have to worry about stumbling over items to get into the bed or if they need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Another added benefit is that if your guest wants to do a little reading before bedtime they’ll have a nice light to do so.
Make Your Guest Room Welcoming By Keeping Decor Neutral and Minimal
A guest room is usually the extra room in your home. This makes it easy to fill the space with stuff you don’t have a room for or you’re just not ready to get rid of. Let’s face it nobody feels welcome in a cluttered and chaotic space.
Instead, before your guests arrive clear out the clutter from the guest room. In fact, this is the perfect excuse to get this done! Once you have the space cleared out, keep the decorations very simple and focus on a neutral color palette which tends to be more relaxing and calming.
The less is more is truer than ever when it comes to a guest room!
Display the Wifi Password
No one ever really wants to ask for someone else’s password and that includes the wifi password. Make your guest feel welcome by having the password displayed in the guest bedroom.
You can write it down on some pretty paper and stick it in a frame that’s displayed on the dresser or nightstand. This type of little thoughtful touch goes a long way toward making your guests feel valued and welcome!
Along with the password, having a spare phone charger, in case they forgot their own, will be met with gratitude.
Keep a Snack Basket in the Guestroom
We all get those snack cravings from time to time. Having a cute little basket filled with some packaged snacks and a couple of bottles of water will make your guest feel so welcome.
They will be able to relax while they enjoy their munchies and be so glad they came to stay with you!
A Television
If you have an extra TV, set it up in the guest room. Your guests may not have the same sleeping schedule as you do. So a TV in the guest room is nice for them to be able to relax in their room while you’re still sleeping.
Extras to Complete Your Welcoming Guest Room
There are a few little extra items that are easy to forget, but go a long way toward making your guest room welcoming.
A clock that illuminates the time. A mirror is a nice touch and will be so helpful when your guests are getting ready for the day. You’ll also want to make sure there is a small wastebasket in the room.
Little touches like a candle or fresh flowers are so thoughtful. Add anything else that you think will make your guest feel at home, such as a key to your house so they feel free to come and go on their own.
What if You Don’t Have a Guest Room?
Now that we’ve looked at how to make your guest room welcoming, what if you don’t have an actual guest room?
I personally don’t have an extra room for guests. Yet, I still have guests stay over and want to make them feel welcome.
Some of the things we have done over the years are to invest in an air mattress and a futon. Keeping spare blankets and pillows for guests to use helps them to feel welcome.
Make sure to clear a space for them to keep their suitcase and other items.
If they are first-time guests show them where things are located such as towels, and other toiletries. Let them know they are welcome to anything in the Kitchen. If there is something you are saving for a special meal, let them know that too.
Finally, let them know where all the items we discussed above are located in your home. Ensure them they’re free to make themselves at home and you’re happy they have chosen to stay with you.
Just remember making your guests feel welcome is about the size of your hospitality not the size of your home.
