This is such an exciting time! You have finally narrowed down the colleges you plan on visiting and schedule your visit, you want to make sure you are prepared to get the most out of your visit.
You are going to have a lot of information to process on your visit so it’s important to be fully prepared. It is best to write down your questions and take notes so that you can be sure to get all of your questions asked. Remember don’t be shy or embarrassed to ask any questions you may have. Most likely the person giving the tour is a student and they can be your best source of honest answers. To help get your ideas flowing for creating your questions here are 44 to start with, in no particular order:
- Ask about average class size. There is a big difference between attending classes with 450 other students versus 50 other students?
- Do the Professors keep regular office hours and are you encouraged to drop and speak with the Professors?
- What kind of organizations are on campus and can you get a written list?
- What are internship opportunities available in your study of interest?
- Can you participate in research or get hands-on experience as a freshman?
- What do students do on weekends?
- How many years does it take the average student to graduate?
- Ask about safety. Do they have their own campus police / how many there are?
- Do they have club sports or pick-up games?
- What transportation is available for students to get around? Do they have free bussing or shuttling service?
- What are the typical dorm rooms are like?
- What is the food like, are there good places to get food?
- Are classes mostly taught by T.A’s or professors?
- Do they have free wireless internet, is it available everywhere on campus or in hot spots?
- Where do most students study, is there a good place to study?
- What are the best meal plans?
- What recreational activities are available?
- What is the environment around the campus like, the diversity, school spirit, friendliness, party atmosphere, etc?
- What is the social life like here? (Ask current students this one.)
- What is required on the application?
- What is/are the most important factor for admission?
- What kind of classes should you be taking now to prepare for your major? (This question should be directed toward a professor or student of that major or a major similar to it.)
- Do they have a separate school, within the university for your major?
- Do all, or at least the majority, of the professors, have degrees in their fields?
- What kind of organizations are present here, community service groups, Greek, major-related clubs, religious clubs, anything you’re interested in?
- Are studying abroad opportunities available?
- What kind of facilities do you have for working out, sports, band, theater, etc?
- What do you do if you have a problem with a roommate?
- What are the policies for overnight guests in the dorms?
- Can you request to room with a particular person, and if so, would you recommend this?
- Are there any requirements for students living on campus. For example, sometimes only the freshman can live on campus or only seniors can live off-campus?
- What is/isn’t allowed in the dorms, appliances, etc?
- Are the dorms co-ed, are there gender only floors if the dorm is co-ed?
- What do you think about the school and what are your experiences?
- What is the drop out rate?
- What is the percentage of graduates getting a job after school?
- What cultural activities are available on campus? Theater, music, street fairs, farmers markets, etc?
- Are there areas in the community that are considered unsafe for students?
- Is there a campus safety/ violence prevention policy in place?
- What types of jobs offered to students on campus?
- Is it an open or closed campus?
- How strong is the Alumni Association?
- Do students pay to attend home sporting and other school events?
- What is the best way to get to know other students?
